P!nk‘s Beautiful Trauma moved 408K “equivalent units” in its first week, the largest tally for an album by a female artist so far this year. P!nk’s tally is topped by only three albums in 2017—Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN.(603K), Drake’s More Life (505K) and Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (451K).P!nk‘s Beautiful Trauma moved 408K “equivalent units” in its first week, the largest tally for an album by a female artist so far this year. P!nk’s tally is topped by only three albums in 2017—Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN.(603K), Drake’s More Life (505K) and Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (451K).

Since late 2014, when Billboard switched from a sales-only chart to a “consumption” chart which also factors in digital track sales and streaming activity, just two albums by female artists have gotten off to faster starts. Adele’s 25 debuted in December 2015 with a mind-boggling 3,482,000. Beyoncé’s Lemonade debuted in May 2016 with 653K.

Beautiful Trauma is P!nk’s second No. 1 album in a row on the Billboard 200. She first topped the chart in October 2012 with The Truth About Love. This is P!nk’s seventh top 10 album.
In addition, P!nk lands her 21st top 20 hit on the Hot 100 as “What About Us” leaps from No. 23 to No. 13 in its 11th week. P!nk first cracked the top 20 in March 2000 with “There You Go.”

P!nk’s “equivalent units” tally includes traditional album sales of 384K. That’s the biggest tally for traditional album sales since Drake’s Views debuted with sales of 852K in May 2016. More than 200K of those sales came from a concert ticket/album sale redemption promotion. These “bundles” are an increasing factor in the album market.

Here, Billboard‘s Keith Caulfield explains how it worked in P!nk’s case: “The cost of the CD edition of the album was bundled into the purchase price of each ticket sold online to P!nk’s upcoming 40-date U.S. and Canada tour. After purchasing a ticket, customers received (via email) a redemption offer for the album, where they could choose to redeem the CD and have it mailed to them. The only sales that count towards the charts are those albums that are redeemed by customers.” P!nk’s is by far the biggest bundle of the year.

Beautiful Trauma also enters the Official U.K. Albums Chart at No. 1. It’s the third album by a female artist to become a transatlantic No. 1 in 2017. The first two were Lana Del Rey’s Lust for Life and Shania Twain’s Now. Beautiful Trauma is P!nk’s second No. 1 album in the U.K., following Funhouse (which peaked at No. 2 in the U.S. in November 2008.)
